The Centre's Role
The Centre for Youth Drug Studies (CYDS) is the research arm of the Australian Drug Foundation.
The Centre’s Mission
CYDS conducts research into the nature, meaning and effects of young people’s drug use, and into the efficacy of programs and strategies in drug prevention, education and early intervention.
The Centre’s Research Profile
CYDS is committed to the development of excellence in drug prevention policy and practice, and aims to provide leadership, support and advice to policy makers in government and non-government sectors. CYDS attracts funding for its research from a range of sources including public research funding bodies, government, private and philanthropic bodies. Since the Centre was launched in 1995, a diverse program of research has been conducted at national, state and local levels. Recent research projects have explored the following:
- The nature, meaning and effects of drug use by young people.
- The efficacy of programs and strategies in drug prevention, early intervention and harm minimisation.
- The development and implementation of drug and alcohol policy in different community settings such as licensed venues, sporting clubs and schools.
- Harm minimisation strategies for young people at risk of developing a severe drug problem.
